All about Soviet cartoons

I want to tell you all about Soviet cartoons.

The pioneer of Russian animation is considered to be the artist and cameraman Vladislav Alexandrovich Starevich, who in the 1910s in the Studio of A. A. Khanzhonkov developed a special artistic technique and technique for staging and shooting three-dimensional puppet animation, which has remained in its main features to the present.

In 1936, a cartoon Studio was established in the USSR. On June 10, 2020, «Soyuzmultfilm» Studio turns 84.

By order of the government in 1936, Moscow animation studios were merged into one-Soyuzdetmultfilm. However, a year later the syllable » DET » dropped. The first stars of the Studio are already established Directors Ivan Ivanov-Vano, Valentina and Zinaida Brumberg, Vladimir Suteev, Dmitry Babichenko. At first, they made exclusively short films for children in the «disney» manner, studying celluloid technology. However, gradually the masters mastered new genres and techniques.

In 1945, the first full-length cartoon «the Missing letter»was released. Great theater actors began working with the Studio, who not only voiced the characters, but also starred as in a feature film — the animators then reproduced the movement in the drawing. This method was called «Eclair» or rotoscoping.

In 1953 «Soyuzmultfilm» began to produce puppet animated films.

In 1957, hand-drawn and puppet films began to win over foreign audiences, and after the success of the Snow Queen in Venice, the Pope called on the congregation to watch Soviet cartoons — the kindest and most humane in the world. With the thaw came adaptations of world classics, acutely satirical animation and so-called cartoons for adults.

In 1969, Soyuzmultfilm presented the audience with the first animated musical «Bremen town musicians», the first drawn cycle» Well, wait! «and the animated magazine» Merry carousel», which still exists today.

In 1979, Yuri Norstein completed work on the film «the Tale of fairy tales», which received international recognition and carried from 1984 to 2003 the title of «the best animated film of all time», and received the USSR State prize for the films «Fox and hare», «Heron and crane» and «Hedgehog in the fog».

Having survived the difficult 90s and noughties, Soyuzmultfilm begins a new countdown. In 2017, the Studio moves to a new building and conducts a large-scale technological modernization. In addition to traditional author’s short films, the team took up the production of TV series. The work on the full-length film «Hoffmaniad», which lasted almost 15 years, is being completed. This is the Studio’s first full-length film in 30 years. The Studio is nearly doubling the creative team and continues to attract professionals in the field of animation in their team. A Technopark opens on the basis of the Studio, where all animation techniques will be presented — doll production, plasticine animation, traditional hand-drawn animation and 3D animation.

In addition to traditional courses for young animators, Soyuzmultfilm opens the first children’s educational center in 2018. The Studio has its own exhibition with rare and original works of the great masters of Soviet animation, as well as an exhibition of decorations and dolls from the film «Hoffmaniad».

Soyuzmultfilm is a Soviet and Russian state-owned animated film Studio. During its existence, more than 1.5 thousand cartoons were released in various genres and artistic techniques: doll, plasticine and drawn. Many films have enriched the Golden Fund of world animation classics, been awarded prestigious international and Russian prizes and awards, and have become an integral part of Russian culture. The Studio maintains continuity in relation to the classic legacy of Soviet animation and at the same time focuses on a young audience. Today, Soyuzmultfilm is actively engaged in the development of serial production, adaptation of domestic animation to foreign markets, and also creates educational content for children.
